Mauritius in May: Weather, Activities and Tips

Updated: August 2026

?

Is May a good month to visit Mauritius?

Yes, May is excellent. Dry, cool weather, few tourists, reasonable prices and cyclones almost impossible. One of the best months to travel.

Mauritius in May: welcome to the beautiful season

May is the month when Mauritius shows off its most charming side. The hot, humid summer is firmly behind. The trade winds settle in gently, bringing an invigorating freshness. The sky clears, rainfall drops off, and temperatures reach a perfect balance between mild and warm. May is unanimously considered one of the two or three best months to visit Mauritius.

What sets May apart from the other good months is its unique combination: the vegetation is still green and lush thanks to the previous quarter’s rains, the sea is still warm (24-26°C), and the intense blue skies of the austral winter start to settle in. It’s the ideal month for travelers who want to experience the island at its best without paying the premium prices of July or December. To check whether May fits your travel style, our guide to the best time to visit Mauritius compares every month of the year.

Weather and temperatures in May

Ideal temperatures

May’s temperatures are often described by travelers as “perfect”. Daytime highs settle between 24 and 27°C along the coast — pleasant warmth that lets you tan, swim and explore without suffering. Nights become cool and restful: 18 to 21°C on the coast, sometimes 14 to 16°C on the central plateau.

This nighttime coolness is appreciated by most European travelers used to continental summers. Sleeping without air conditioning with a light sea breeze drifting through an open window is a luxury January-February can’t offer. In May, even without air conditioning, nights are comfortable in most accommodations.

In the highlands (Curepipe, Vacoas, Chamarel), afternoon temperatures don’t exceed 22 to 24°C and evenings can be cool — pack a light sweater for dinners on a hilltop terrace. This coolness contrasts pleasantly with the warmth of the coastal areas.

Low rainfall

May sees rainfall drop to around 50 to 70 mm on the northwest coast, spread over 6 to 8 days. Most days are sunny from morning to evening. The rare showers are light and passing, rarely disruptive. The sky shows intense blues, and the island’s colors are enhanced by the austral winter light.

Relative humidity drops to 68 to 74%, giving a dry, luminous atmosphere quite different from summer. Air quality is remarkable: visibility is at its peak, the island’s central mountains stand out sharply against the blue sky from the coasts, and sunsets on the west coast take on spectacular orange and golden hues.

The east coast receives more rainfall than the west coast in May — that holds true all year round. But even on the east coast (Belle Mare), May remains a pleasant month with mostly sunny days.

Sea: still lovely, visibility improving

The sea gradually cools: 24 to 26°C in May. It’s still very pleasant for extended swimming, snorkeling and diving — a light wetsuit (2-3 mm shorty) is enough for long sessions. Underwater visibility improves noticeably compared to summer: 25 to 35 m at the best west coast sites, among the best conditions of the year for observing the seabed.

Swell conditions are generally good along most of the coastline. The east coast starts getting windier as the trade winds settle in, but the lagoons remain suitable for swimming and snorkeling. Our snorkeling and diving guide covers the best spots on each coast for the May-June period.

The trade winds set in

The southeast trade winds start blowing more consistently in May. On the east coast, winds of 15 to 25 knots are possible, creating an invigorating atmosphere and ideal conditions for wind sports. On the west coast, the mountains’ protective effect keeps swimming conditions calm even as the trade winds pick up.

Zero cyclone risk

The cyclone season officially ends at the end of April. In May, cyclone risk is virtually nonexistent. It’s one of the great freedoms of the month: you can travel without any concern about extreme conditions, without needing specific cyclone insurance, and without fear of excursions being cancelled due to storm warnings.

Crowds and prices in May

Low to medium season

Outside of the May 1st long weekend and Ascension Day holidays (sometimes falling in May depending on the calendar), crowds are moderate in May. It’s the period between two major tourist seasons: after the spring and Easter influx, before the July-August summer holidays. The island returns to a relaxed pace that delights travelers seeking authenticity.

Beaches aren’t crowded, restaurants accept walk-ins without a reservation, and the welcome from Mauritians is especially warm when the island isn’t overwhelmed by tourists. It’s often in May and October that travelers return for a second visit after discovering the island in high season and looking for a calmer experience.

Attractive prices and good value

May’s rates are among the most attractive of the “austral winter” period. Hotels, aware of the month’s quality, charge prices higher than true low season (September) but lower than the July-August and December peaks. It’s the perfect compromise for travelers who want guaranteed good weather without paying top price.

Our Mauritius budget guide provides precise benchmarks: a 4-star hotel in May costs on average 30 to 40% less than in July, for nearly identical weather conditions. A solid financial argument.

Hiking: the right time

May marks the unofficial start of hiking season in Mauritius. Temperatures allow for long outings without risk of heatstroke. Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire (828 m, the island’s highest point) is thoroughly enjoyable in May: the climb is comfortable, the views over the west coast and Le Morne’s lagoons are spectacular, and the wind at altitude cools without biting.

The Black River Gorges, the Plaine Champagne plateau and the trails of Chamarel are all accessible and pleasant in May. Local guides are available and groups are small, allowing for a more intimate experience. Our Mauritius hiking guide details the best trails by skill level and outlines routes suited to the cool season.

Scuba diving: peak visibility

May’s underwater visibility (25 to 35 m) is well above summer levels. Divers get a better overall experience, even though the water is slightly cooler. The west coast dive sites — Flic-en-Flac, Wolmar, Faux Cap — reveal their full richness this season: drop-offs covered in hard and soft corals, caves, and schools of soldierfish and giant groupers.

Our Mauritius snorkeling and diving guide covers the best spots on each coast, with the species typically seen in the cool season. The dive centers in Flic-en-Flac are well equipped and offer courses for all levels.

Water sports: the first kitesurfers

The first kitesurfers of the season appear on the east coast. Wind conditions are still variable but start becoming interesting, especially in the lagoon at Le Morne. Tamarin and Baie du Souffleur also start offering acceptable surf conditions. May is an ideal initiation period for kitesurfing beginners.

Light sailing and catamaran trips are very pleasant with steady but not yet overly strong winds. Trips to Ile aux Bénitiers and the northern islets enjoy ideal sailing conditions.

Swimming with dolphins

The spinner dolphins of Tamarin bay are present every morning year-round. In May, sea conditions are excellent for swimming with dolphins — clear water, not too choppy, pleasant temperatures. Choose a responsible operator that respects regulatory distances and doesn’t chase the animals.

The swimming with dolphins in Tamarin excursion is especially popular in May thanks to the clear waters of early dry season.

Ile aux Cerfs and excursions

Ile aux Cerfs, in the east coast lagoon, is accessible and enjoyable in May. The lagoon waters stay warm and turquoise, ideal for swimming and snorkeling off the island’s white sand beaches. The trade winds start bringing a welcome touch of freshness. Catamaran excursions to Ile aux Cerfs from Trou d’Eau Douce make for a memorable day out.

Book your spot on the catamaran excursion to Ile aux Cerfs with lunch on board to combine the crossing, snorkeling and a seafood meal in the lagoon.

Whale watching (early season)

Whale watching season can begin timidly in late May. The first humpback whales passing through Mauritian waters during their migration from Antarctica start being spotted. West coast operators sometimes organize exploratory outings. The season will be in full swing from June to September — our complete guide to whale watching in Mauritius explains the best periods and recommended operators.

Cultural discovery

May is a month of interesting religious festivals. The Hindu calendar is rich during this period, and the weekly markets of Flacq (Wednesday), Port Louis (central market, every day) and Mahébourg (Monday) are full of color and local produce.

Family activities and romantic getaways

May is an ideal month for families traveling outside of school holidays. Our family activities guide lists the best options — kids especially love the still-warm sea and the dolphin excursions. For couples looking for a peaceful, romantic honeymoon, May offers a perfect setting with prices well below December’s. Our Mauritius honeymoon itinerary offers a complete program for an unforgettable romantic stay.

Events in May

Labour Day (May 1st): national public holiday. Markets in Port-Louis and community festivities bring the island to life. Mauritians picnic with their families on the most accessible beaches — a festive, family-friendly atmosphere that’s very pleasant for travelers who happen to be there.

Vesak (Buddhist festival): celebrated by the Sino-Mauritian Buddhist community. Lanterns and offerings decorate certain temples. A peaceful and moving ceremony for visitors who attend respectfully.

Sport fishing tournaments: May marks the start of the mid-season for deep-sea fishing. Some clubs offer introductions to offshore fishing techniques — an original activity for travelers looking to go off the beaten path. The ports of Grand Baie and Rivière Noire are busy with fishing boats.

West coast (Flic-en-Flac, Tamarin, Le Morne): unquestionably the best area for swimming and relaxing in May. Calm sea, generous sunshine, gorgeous white sand beaches. The Le Morne peninsula and its resorts offer a stunning setting with the mountain as a backdrop. Sunsets over the Indian Ocean are especially spectacular in May.

Central plateau (Chamarel, Black River Gorges, Curepipe): ideal for nature excursions. Native forests and endemic species — Java deer, green monkeys, rare birds like the Mauritius echo parakeet — are particularly visible during this time of year.

North coast (Grand Baie, Pereybere, Trou aux Biches): always pleasant with its white sand beaches and clear waters. The north coast is well protected from southeast winds in May, offering calm swimming. Grand Baie’s buzz — restaurants, bars, shops — is on offer without the overcrowding of the summer high season.

East coast (Belle Mare, Palmar): still pleasant in May before the trade winds pick up. The lagoon is beautiful, and beaches are uncrowded on weekdays. An excursion to Ile aux Cerfs from Trou d’Eau Douce in May is a great experience.

For transport, renting a car is recommended for exploring freely. Roads are dry and pleasant to drive on in May. Our Mauritius car rental guide gives reference prices and reliable providers. The bus network connects the main areas at very low cost for budget travelers.

What to pack for May

May is milder than June or July, but nights remain cool, especially on the central plateau. Pack a light sweater or jacket for the evenings, light clothing for daytime, and a swimsuit suited to a still-warm sea (24-26°C) that allows for long swims without a wetsuit. Water shoes are useful for snorkeling around rocky areas, and high-SPF sunscreen remains essential despite the mild conditions. Our Mauritius flights guide and our travel insurance guide round out your trip preparations.

Yes, without hesitation. May is one of the two best months of the year, alongside October. It combines nearly every advantage: pleasant, dry weather, ideal temperatures, zero cyclone risk, sea still warm and clear, few crowds and reasonable prices. The only downside is that the sea is slightly cooler than in summer and the east coast can be windy. Nothing to worry about.

If you’re flexible on dates and looking for the optimal combination of weather, budget and tranquility, May is an absolute safe bet for a successful trip to Mauritius.
