Tamarin (South of Flic-en-Flac)

Technically a separate locality, Tamarin is often grouped with the Flic-en-Flac area. It’s a more residential and upmarket neighbourhood, popular with expats and families staying long-term. A car is strongly recommended. Unlike Grand Baie, Flic-en-Flac is more spread out and public transport is limited. A rental car lets you explore the west coast (Tamarin, Le Morne, Baie du Cap) and easily reach Grand Baie or Port-Louis. Budget 35 to 55 EUR/day for a small hatchback.

The beach is nicer in the morning. In high season, Flic-en-Flac beach can get fairly busy in late morning and the afternoon. Get there early to grab the best spots and the calmest waters.

The Stella Maru: the wreck of a Japanese cargo ship sunk in 1987, resting at 25 metres. Colonised by abundant marine life — soft corals, moray eels, lionfish, barracudas. A must-do dive for level 2 divers and above.
