Northern region of Mauritius — complete guide to destinations and activities

The north of Mauritius is the epicentre of Mauritian tourism — and for good reason. Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, Pereybere, Mont-Choisy: a string of white sand beaches lined by a turquoise lagoon, within easy reach of restaurants, shops and water sports operators. If you're looking to see everything Mauritius has to offer without renting a car, this is probably where you should base yourself.

The mood here is deliberately upbeat. In the evening, Grand Baie comes alive with beachfront bars, restaurants for every budget and a handful of clubs. By day, boats leave at all hours for the northern islands — Coin de Mire, Ile Plate, Ile Gabriel — for snorkelling and diving. Catamaran trips around the coast are also popular, with a swimming stop and lunch on board.

Less touristy but just as charming, Cap Malheureux has a more relaxed feel. Its small red-roofed church is one of the most photographed sights on the island. Further north still, Balaclava is prized for its colonial ruins and clear waters, far from the buzz of Grand Baie. And Pamplemousses, a little further inland, is worth a morning for its botanical garden, one of the oldest in the southern hemisphere.

The north is also the island's practical gateway: Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport is 45-50 minutes away by taxi depending on your hotel, and Port-Louis — the capital — is reachable in half an hour. Ideal for travellers who want an easy base, a morning at the central market, and an afternoon back on the beach.

Weather-wise, the north is one of the mildest areas of Mauritius: sheltered from the strongest trade winds, it enjoys stable conditions almost year-round. High season (July-August) sees prices rise and hotels fill up — book early. Between April and November remains the best window to enjoy the sea and blue skies.
