Le Morne — luxury on a legendary beach

Le Morne offers one of the most spectacular beachfront settings on the island. The peninsula’s two big hotels — Le Paradis Beachcomber and Dinarobin Beachcomber — sit directly on the beach, with white sand stretching out in front of both properties’ gardens.

What makes Le Morne special: the lagoon is exceptional for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and the hotels run schools directly on the beach. It’s one of the few places on earth where you can learn to kitesurf with your feet in a turquoise lagoon and a UNESCO-listed mountain at your back.

Pereybere is the northern area where you can stay close to the beach without breaking the bank. The bay is small and intimate, and several apartment or villa rentals sit 50-100 metres from the sand — a distance that, on a moderate budget, still delivers remarkable beach access.

A few rental houses sit directly on the beach at Pereybere, let by local owners at prices well below equivalent hotels in Trou aux Biches or Grand Baie. This is the trick used by travellers who know the island well to combine beach position with a controlled budget.

What to check before booking “beachfront” accommodation

The actual distance: “sea view” is not “beachfront”. A property can have a sea view from an upper floor while sitting 300 metres from the beach. Always ask for the exact distance in metres to the water.

The quality of the beach in front of the property: some hotels are beachfront but face a pebble beach, a rocky area, or a beach unsuitable for swimming. Check the photos and recent reviews.

Beach access rules: a public beach in front of a hotel means other travellers and locals can use it too. That’s not a negative in itself — the atmosphere can be lovely — but it’s not the same as semi-private beach access.

Loungers and parasols: most beachfront hotels offer sun loungers on the beach, but they’re sometimes chargeable (3 to 8 euros per parasol and loungers) or included only in certain packages. Check before booking.

The season: in high season (July-August and December-January), even the widest beaches can get busy. If you’re after privacy, April-June and September-November offer the best conditions.

Snorkeling right off your beach
